Alvin Wong is a fortunate young musician who has embarked on a musical journey across three continents. He has won prizes, including the Illinois MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition and the Evanston Music Club and North Shore Musicians Club Competitions in the USA. He is also one of the very few Hongkongers to have appeared in prestigious competitions like the Adolphe Sax International Competition and the Andorra International Saxophone Competition.
Having performed in more than ten countries across three continents, Alvin has a diverse performance portfolio spanning solo, ensemble, and orchestral work, as well as traditional and contemporary music. He is part of the emerging Belgium-based new music group, Ensemble Rhizome, and in the UK, he regularly tours as a soloist and as a member of both Ensemble Fioritura and Tricola. In 2023, he was selected to give a solo recital at the World Saxophone Congress in Gran Canaria, Spain.
In his native Hong Kong, Alvin is an active and in-demand saxophonist who organizes and participates in public events during his annual summer visits. These include solo recitals, solo engagements with the Hong Kong Youth Saxophone Choir, and saxophone orchestra concerts, all of which have been well received by local audiences and the saxophone community.
Alvin’s ensemble experience began in his earlier years. In 2018, he was selected through audition to join the Asian Youth Orchestra, which awarded him a fully sponsored performance tour, giving 16 concerts in 11 Asian cities as an orchestral saxophonist.
Despite his frequent relocations, Alvin is a passionate educator who currently serves as a woodwind and music theory teacher for Trafford Council in the UK. In 2019, he was invited to the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Pre-competition Workshop, where he provided demonstrations and tips to high school students.
In addition to performing, Alvin is also an arranger and composer. His composition was selected as a finalist in the New Generation 2019 competition and was premiered and broadcast on RTHK4, Hong Kong’s classical music radio station. In 2018, he was commissioned by the city of Ayase, Japan, to create an orchestral arrangement of the city’s song for its 40th anniversary.
Alvin completed his bachelor's degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was awarded a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University, one of America’s most renowned conservatories for saxophone study. He recently received his concert soloist diploma from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, Belgium. Alvin has recently moved to the UK, the fourth country in his musical journey, where he continues to make and share music.
