Dr. Chemie Ching stands out as one of Hong Kong's most acclaimed and versatile saxophonists, captivating audiences with exceptional musicianship across classical, contemporary, and jazz.
As a performer, Ching's talent as a chamber musician shines through the role as a founding member of Dasch Quartet, which won the North American Saxophone Alliance Saxophone Quartet Competition and ENKÖR Chamber Music Competition. The quartet released its debut CD "Necessary Edges" in March 2016. Ching's accolades also include winning the 2015 Coltman Chamber Music Competition, which led to a featured guest artist appearance at the Austin Chamber Music Festival in 2016.
Ching has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Hong Kong Symphonic Winds and the Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra. Performing at the prominent Freespace Jazz Festival with numerous acclaimed jazz bands and ensembles in consecutive years further solidified Ching's reputation as a multifaceted artist. Ching's leadership qualities are evident in the role as the Music Director of the La Sax Saxophone Ensemble, where Ching guides and inspires fellow musicians.
Ching earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance from Michigan State University, studying under the world-renowned saxophonist Joseph Lulloff. Prior to this, Ching obtained a Master of Music degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts under the guidance of Taimur Sullivan. Ching's educational foundation was laid at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying with Michael Campbell and Jennifer To.
Dr. Chemie Ching's recent solo recital in the highly regarded LCSD 'Our Music Talents' Series in November 2023 was a testament to remarkable musicianship and commitment to broadening the musical horizons of Hong Kong's audience.
Ching's program for the evening had a specific goal in mind: to introduce and familiarize the Hong Kong audience with contemporary saxophone music. Understanding the importance of bridging different musical worlds, Ching incorporated jazz-influenced pieces into the repertoire. This strategic selection served multiple purposes - it not only highlighted the versatility of the saxophone as an instrument but also expanded the musical palette of Hong Kong's concert-goers, aligning with Ching's role as a musical ambassador and educator.
Dr. Chemie Ching's multifaceted career as a performer and educator continues to inspire and shape the saxophone landscape in Hong Kong and beyond.
