Born in Macao, China. Hugo Loi started taking music lessons on the guitar at the age of 6 and saxophone lessons at the age of 12. During his studies at the Macao Conservatoire, he won 1st prizes for both solo and ensemble playing in the Macao Youth Music Competition. In 2006, as a winner of the Macao Concerto Competition, he performed A. Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto with the Macao Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Macao Youth Symphonic Band, which perform regularly throughout Asia.
In 2007, with a scholarship from the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau, Hugo continued his Bachelor of Music on classical saxophone at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague,Netherlands, studying with Frank Timpe and he completed his Master degree at the same institution in 2013 with distinction, studying under David Kweksilber.
Alongside his classical saxophone study, Hugo also has a strong inter- est on Improvisation. He takes improvisation lessons regularly with jazz saxophonist John Ruocco. He was also a member of the European Im- provisation Intensive, in where he took lessons with great improvisers from all over the world including David Dolan, Vincent Le Quang and Noam Sivan amongst others. In the beginning of 2013 Hugo was selected as the representative of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, together with leading Dutch composer Martijn Padding, for a project tour to the University of Accra, Ghana, where he gave solo concerts and worked with the students of the music department.
After returning to Macao, Hugo devotes himself to music education. He is currently the conductor of Pui Ching Middle School wind Band, saxophone professor at the Macao polytechnic and among many others high school. He is also one of the tutors in the Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy since 2016.
As a performer, Hugo is also very active in the local music scene. He has held many solo recital and chamber music concerts. In 2016, he was invited by the Cultural Affairs Bureau to become the first group of local young musicians to give solo recital in the Macao International Music Festival.
