Junichi Sato is a saxophonist, researcher, and educator based in Japan. He holds a
doctoral degree in music(DMA) from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music,
making him the first person to achieve a DMA in the field of saxophone in Japan. His
primary focus is on Luciano Berio and contemporary music, and he places significant
importance on the traditional repertoire. He has organized the "B→C Recital" with grants
from the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation and has received support from numerous
other foundations for his performance and research activities.
He has premiered many new works for saxophone, especially the compositions of JacobTV
and Masakazu Natsuda, which he debuted at the Saxophone Congress and have now
become part of the saxophone repertoires performed worldwide. As an educator, he
conducts master classes, concerts, and lectures in various countries, including at the
National Conservatory of Paris, the Manhattan School of Music, and the National Taiwan
University of Arts etc.
He serves as an associate professor at Hokkaido National University of Education and also
works as a lecturer at Sapporo Otani University and Hokusho University. He is the only
academic with tenure specialized in saxophone within Japanese national universities.
Furthermore, he actively contributes to music education by serving as a judge in numerous
competitions.
